Environmental Emergencies
United Nations Enviromental Programme

The UNEP Disaster Management Branch seeks to address the immediate and long term human, social, health, economic and environmental impacts of natural and human-induced disasters, and aims to minimize the resulting environmental emergencies that they cause. The approach is to promote disaster management to reduce vulnerability and enhance coping-mechanisms through capacity building.

The activities of the Disaster Management Branch focus on:

bulletPreparedness;
bulletAssessment, response, and mitigation;
bulletRisk reduction;
bulletMobilizing resources.

The Branch operates in collaboration with numerous agencies, and comprises of two units, the Environment Coordination Unit (ECU) and the Joint UNEP/Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Environment Unit. The joint UNEP/OCHA Unit serves to facilitate, international response to environmental emergencies, multilateral coordination, assessment, and as a clearinghouse for information and maintaining a 24-hour notification and alert system.

Disaster management information system for Africa - database

The Disaster Management Information System for Africa contains a compilation of institutions working on disaster and environmental risk reduction in Africa. It is intended to enhance information exchange and promote co-ordination of efforts in Africa through the provision of a comprehensive and authoritative profile of institutions working in the area of disaster management and environmental risk reduction. It identifies suppliers of data and information at national, regional and local levels.

Indigenous Knowledge Helps in Disaster Management

Nairobi, 9 August 2006 - To mark the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People (9 August), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is announcing a unique programme that draws upon indigenous knowledge to help deal with natural disasters.
